For those uninitiated, he may be known as Willie Nelson’s son. When he graced The Castle Theatre with his presence on Sunday, July 29th, he proved to be more than just Willie’s kin successor. Lukas Nelson & Promise of The Real took the audience by surprise when the band displayed such an eclectic sound. The American Rock n’ Roll band attracted a diverse crowd who left the venue drenched with sweat after dancing the night away.
As Lucas grew up primarily in Maui, you can hear some of the Hawaiian influences that gave a laid-back vibe accompanied by steady djembe beats. Other influences developed from Lukas’ love for Stevie Ray Vaughn, Neil Young and Bob Dylan. Both are also prominent in POTR’s sound as they convey boozy blues and electric folk. The band’s name derives from a Neil Young song, “Walk On,” which features the line "Some get stoned/ Some get strange/ But sooner or later it all gets real." Lukas explained to Chris Parker, writer for The Charleston City Paper, "It's a reference for us keeping our humility throughout everything. For bad or good, we're going to be real. We're going to be who we are. We're taking Neil's promise and applying it to our band."
With their upcoming album, “Love Yourself,” soon to release in August, the band shared a few tracks including “Find Yourself” and “Love Yourself.” The band is currently touring promoting their new album.
