TONIGHT (11/7) upstairs in THE KEEP, don't miss PETER KARP & SUE FOLEY for a night of high voltage, plank spankin', piano boogyin', slide guitar stompin' blues-rockin' good times!
For twenty years, Sue Foley has been proving that, despite the stereotypes, Canadian women can play the blues as well as anybody. She has released nine albums as a leader, and established herself as one of the most important singer, songwriter, and guitarist in the blues field. Peter Karp has shifted careers several times over his life, but for the last six years, he's been garnering raves as a singer/songwriter with blues and folk roots.
A couple years or so ago, Foley and Karp began a correspondence which turned into songwriting inspiration, as they eventually developed a song cycle charting the ups and downs and dual perspectives on a single relationship between a man and a woman. There's anticipation, wonder, sex, miscommunication, regret, delight, hope, fear, sadness, and joy documented in these songs, which comprise the duo's excellent release, He Said She Said.
Karp and Foley turn out to have remarkable musical chemistry, and they push each other into new territories as well. While He Said She Said is a blues-based album on a blues label, there isn't a single 12-bar blues in the course of fourteen songs. The opener, "Treat Me Right," comes closest, though it's actually a 16-bar blues, with an extra B line which produces a delightful tension as the expected release doesn't come when you've been trained to hear it. Foley and Karp belt their lines out, as each answers the other, or comes up with side comments as the song goes on. Karp provides a juicy hook with his slurring of the word "Honey" in those B lines – something that simple can actually make a good song become great.
He Said She Said is an entertainment chock full of musical pleasures and deeper resonances regarding the ways these two characters experience their brief times together. Peter Karp and Sue Foley will go on to do more solo records, but it’s not too much to hope they can find another story to tell together.
